The Isolation Allure

I just ran across this article today while browsing the web: Protecting the Uncontacted. Does anyone else find it fascinating, and maybe even a bit alluring, that there are still people out there who are completely cut off from modern civilization? Maybe it’s just me, but I sometimes find our connected lives overwhelming. Everything feels so fast paced now, and in my opinion, social media has only pushed us further apart in a negative way.

Public discourse has basically moved onto social media, and it’s saturated with negativity. I think part of the problem is that people feel safe saying whatever they want online without any real consequences. While I’m all for free speech, the anonymity that lets people say things that, though technically legal, are still pretty awful really sucks. I doubt you can get away with that in these isolated tribes.

Everyone there has a role: a hunter, a cook, a farmer. You talk to people in your own small corner of the world, and everyone has a purpose, everyone is needed. Pulling your weight is personal, and your tribe’s survival depends on working together. Meanwhile, we “civilized” folks can’t even agree on whether the sky is blue.

The more I think about it, the more it feels like technology has set us back in some ways. Talking crap is just too easy now. I’m not talking about legal repercussions, but sometimes it seems like certain people could use a good punch in the mouth.
