The Roanoke Colony's Forgotten Curse
I LOVED making this episode. As a kid and through my teenage years, I frequented the Outer Banks multiple times a year. A big theme there was the disappearance of the Roanoke Colony. Digging into this was so fun.
In 1590, 118 settlers mysteriously vanished from Roanoke Island, leaving only the word 'Croatoan' carved into a tree. This enigma, predating Jamestown by 17 years, intertwines with stories of reptilian entities, unnaturally cold temperatures, and mysterious lights in the forest. From Edgar Allan Poe's dying delirium to abandoned schooners, 'Croatoan' resurfaces in moments of historical bewilderment. The Croatoan tribe's traditions and the eerie Dare Stone hint at metaphysical transformations. Some propose mass possession leading to dismantled homes and unexplainable behavior among the colonists. Others suggest the settlers encountered a dimensional breach. As artifacts reveal psychic imprints and paranormal phenomena, could the colonists exist in a state where their consciousness still reaches out across centuries? Roanoke remains suspended between the realms of presence and absence, their essence lingering in a shadowy realm where past and present converge.
